music club that is somehow still operating in 2026, is finally closing for good. ”After 9/15/26, The Columbia House will no longer be accepting new orders,” reads a recent message on its website. “You can still purchase books with your credit card or credits as normal.” The announcement was first spotted by YouTube channel Channel 33 RPM and later written up by the blog Cord Cutter News. We’ve reached out to Columbia House for further comment.

Columbia House was founded as Columbia Record Club in 1955 by its namesake music label to send albums directly to hard-to-reach consumers. It promised to mail a set of LPs for mere pennies in exchange for purchasing additional releases down the road at full cost.

Were you ever a Columbia House customer?

I honestly didn’t know they were still going.

I was a subscriber or whatever you’d call it back in the mid-nineties. Overall I think I ended up on the plus side, but there were times a cd that was 12 bucks at Sam Goody’s was a lot more through Columbia House.

It’s funny though, I don’t remember ever quitting them. I must have though.

I know when I was a young naive teenagers. I took advantage of the 12 for $.01 at least twice with Columbia house and twice with BMG.

Yep, 12 for a penny, meet the required purchase then cancel. Eventually they would send another great offer to get you to join again. There was a book company that did the same thing in the 70’s and boy did I take advantage of that membership lol.

I believe it was Doubleday Book Club, get 10 books for $.99 cents and you’d have to buy a certain number to complete the subscription. They were all hard cover books and a great variety of Authors. It was bugging me trying to remember the name of the book company 😂
