I am not sure, exactly, how many ChatGPT signs, flyers, or advertisements I had seen without noticing. But I do remember that once I began noticing them, I saw them everywhere.

The “ChatGPT flyer pandemic” has become a big topic of conversation among graphic designers, musicians, bars, and small business owners who care about design and showing that they’ve put effort into something.

Once you notice a ChatGPT flyer, you will see them everywhere if you keep your eyes open.

What are your thoughts on these flyers? Have you noticed them everywhere, like the article suggests?

I haven’t seen these before, are they on social media or billboards?

Social media. Everywhere you look on social media.

I see way too much used for Amazon product listings.

Most of them are a comically disproportionate scale....like this 80in by 60in mattress:

Others are creepy :

Some are just befuddling....like this magical sourdough starter warmer that can also warm up your nearby raw meat, milk, and sour cream so well that steam rolls off them.

I hate them. The colors are all the same. Too many words. I don't have time to read all that. Just annoying as hell.

Same with the social media posts. You can tell instantly that AI wrote it. They all sound the same.

I have it at work and I'm supposed to use it. Nope.

More and more, I am against A.I. of any kind. I realize there may be times I’m using it without realizing it, but if I can make a conscious effort to avoid it, I do.

The flyers as shown above, I am especially tired of seeing. On the flip side, I’m beginning to see pushback against them. Some people are refusing to attend events or eat at establishments that use these flyers to promote. The owner/management of Patrick’s in Elmira recently made a post that they will not accept or use flyers made by musicians playing there.

I agree. People think it provides creativity. That's not creativity.

Considering the AI "talent" being employed in more and more fields....there's real irony to musicians using it.

There are a few applications that its could/would be beneficial, but way more problems.

Large Language Models (LLMs) rely on scraping data from any/all sources it can access. So what they're doing is not "thinking" or "creativity" any more than a student who copies someone else's answers or plagiarizes a term paper. The only difference is the nearly infinite volume of info the LLMs have access to.

AI can't be trusted. It's has been found to "hallucinate" conclusions and engage in deception and even intentionally inflict harm. Lying or deceiving for it's own interest isn't some weird anomaly, this is a widespread pattern.

There is and I cringed when I saw one of my former bandmates made an AI generated flyer for a recent show.

I simply don't trust AI both for the reasons you mention but also I feel like it's opened a can of worms that's going to be difficult, if not impossible, to put back unless it's a bubble that bursts and soon. There's also the environmental and other concerns I have about the data centers necessary to fuel it.

It seems incredibly short-sighted (and perhap a bit vain) to think the artistic talent of graphic designers and photographers can be replaced by AI....but not care that your own artistic talent could be replaced just as easily.

Since much of the most vocal opposition on "environmental" concerns that I've seen is relayed through memes and rage bait....I'm not sure how much of it true and how much is alarmist hype.

But the energy consumption is a real, documented issue. And I think it’s criminal that Albany is authorizing utilities to raise residential electric rates at more than double the rate of the industrial customers. Data Centers are driving the increased demand (and drawing huge profits), but the taxpaying residents are subsidizing the cost.

Yeah and that's my concern for a lot of it. As for the rest,. environmental and noise concerns, I don't know enough about. Or, I don't know what's real or what's fake when I see stuff online thanks to AI, ironically enough.

Exactly, but the very steak munchers that we send to Albany , via first their Lies then our Votes , are the forward thinkers ( sarcasm Sheldon) looking to get their pockets dusted by those needing the Data Centers , IE Power Suckers ! AI is nothing but another Dumbing Down even further of humanity in the name of progress but we as a Country are racing Down that hill to beat China to the goods just as the steak munchers would have us think . But IMO China is playing the Long game watching us from the Top of that hill wringing their hands and laughing !

Not to sound like some dystopian sci-fi conspiracist.....but the slippery slope should be a taken seriously. 

In the more abstract larger picture, reliance on AI to work “more productively” than humans is a paradox that could collapse economies.   

Fine...autonomous AI drones and robots can do dangerous work fire and emergency rescues, etc. Cool. I understand the benefit.

 

Then, it replaces low-skill clerical and customer service jobs, warehouse inventory and even delivery and driverless cabs. Businesses use AI for white collar jobs like personnel that college grads have been doing.  Next, attorneys and doctors use it to replace educated paralegals and tech assistants.

Theoretically, entire school districts could be run by AI. If teachers are using AI to develop curricula and grade students...how long will we need human teachers? And once driverless cabs are commonplace...do we really human bus drivers? Or, as long as their parents are all unemployed.... just let the AI teach the kids remotely.

 

At what point does AI perform so many jobs that human employment drops....and the result is fewer paying consumers for all those AI products and services?

 

 

I have heard that some businesses, I want to say Taco Bell or possibly Wendy’s, has begun using an AI bot to take orders at the drive through.

As for the flyers, I just looked on Facebook and again, my timeline is filled with the same generic looking posters as in the original post.

I think the trend of not supporting businesses or events that use them is the only way to get them to stop.

And this is interesting because the same people screaming about millionaires paying "their fair share" and that they should be paying more than everyone else, are OK with the billionaire corps that are making money paying less for energy than the residential people who make no profits.

That was Taco Bell. The fella that posted it was amused I guess but did say the AI order taker got it wrong.

It would be like if, instead of campaigning for “the rich” to pay more so they can provide cheaper housing for “average New Yorkers”....Zohran Mandami  jacked up rent for average NYers to offset costs for lower Manhattan high rises.
