May 7May 7 The Bradford County Library will release roughly 400 native North American leaf-cutter bees on Thursday, following an educational presentation on the value of native plant pollinator gardens and how to use native bees when planning them.Unlike the commonly known western honeybees, which were brought to the Americas by Europeans in the 1600s, leaf-cutter bees are native to the area and have unique social structures compared to their European counterparts. Rather than living in large hives with queens, leaf-cutter bees make their homes in tube-like structures such as hollow twigs and live mostly solitary lifestyles. As their name suggests, they cut leaves and use the scraps to line their nests.Source
