State Police Investigating An Officer Involved Shooting In Chemung

On September 28, 2025, at approximately 2:58 p.m., the New York State Police and a Chemung County Sheriff's Deputy responded to Rotary Road in the town of Chemung for a reported active physical domestic incident.

Upon arrival, a State Trooper located a female victim being menaced in the living room. The suspect, identified as  18 year old Nathan J. Novakowski of Chemung was physically threatening the victim with a pair of scissors.

The Trooper issued several commands for Novakowski to drop the weapon in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. Novakowski became increasingly agitated and attempted to stab the victim. To prevent imminent harm to the victim, the Trooper discharged his division-issued firearm, fatally striking Novakowski.

The female victim sustained minor injuries and was treated by Greater Valley Ambulance at the scene. 

The incident remains under investigation by the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) and the New York State Attorney General's Office, in accordance with New York State law.

This is an ongoing investigation.
