WENY: "Repair Cafes" Coming To Corning And Montour Falls

Whether it’s jewelry, old kitchen appliances, or even a bicycle, volunteers said a lot of the fixing can be done yourself. Helping to save both the environment and some money.

Repair cafés are coming to Corning on Apr. 25, and to Montour Falls on May 2. The cafés don’t just fix items; they also teach skills to the people who bring them in. Volunteers will teach people quick fixes on a budget.

"If they have broken items, and it's just a chance for people to come get things fixed and then they're coached on how to fix them,” said Emma Malnoske, Sustainability Education Coordinator for the Village of Montour Falls, and organizer of the Montour Falls Repair Café. “So next time this happens, they have those skills to fix it themselves instead of just tossing it away."

It really is a great idea.

The only issue I see is that participation is probably lower than it could be. As an occasional/annual event, a lot of stuff that could have been repaired is already at the landfill before people who could benefit know this could be an option.

I imagine finding volunteers is challenging....but it's a shame it's not a more regular thing. I could see someplace like the Re-Store doing a monthly workshop like this.

I wish it was appliances. My Maytag washing machine works fine except the part where water fills the washer. It’s now trickling in to fill. We have hard water and over the years it has corroded that part. I hate having to buy a new washing machine because of that. A bucket to fill the washer would definitely be cheaper 😂

Whatever you do, don't get one without an agitator. I'm ready to pitch mine out the back door.

What’s wrong with yours?

It just stinks. Cloths are always out of balance because without the agitator they can float all over the place.

I’ll watch for that if I decide to buy new instead of fill my washer with a bucket lol
