I've tried a few different ways to make my own boxes for mason bees and other spesies to nest in with mixed results. This year I plan to build a "mason bee condo" which will be blocks of wood with as many holes drilled into them as I can get.

The bees seem to like the ones I've bought from Amazon, but they're not exactly cheap.
