Happy 75th Birthday Charlie Brown!

On this day in 1950, Charlie Brown made his first appearance in the very first Peanuts cartoon strip.

The strip appeared in seven newspapers across the country: The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, The Minneapolis Star-Tribune, The Allentown Call-Chronicle, The Bethlehem Globe-Times, The Denver Post, and The Seattle Times.

According to the Charles M Schulz Museum, he was paid $90 for his first month of strips.

Through the decades since that first comic, Schulz, known to many by his nickname, "Sparky," went on to create a world of characters that not only changed the landscape of Sunday comics, but also became beloved around the world.

Over the span of his fifty year career, Schulz drew 17,987 strips.

His final strip was published on February 13, 2000, the morning after Schulz, who had previously suffered a stroke, died from complications of cancer.

Seventy fifth anniversary celebrations are underway at the Charles M. Schulz Museum, overseen by his wife Jean.

Peanuts has been such a part of my life from an early age.

I’m sure my earliest introduction to the gang was through A Charlie Brown Christmas. After that it starts in elementary school at St. Casimer's when the Bookmobile came to school. Myself and two other boys would rush down to get a Peanuts book whether it was the Peanuts Parade books or one of the bigger hardcover ones like Sandlot Peanuts.

Throughout my adult years I’ve been collecting as many of those books as possible. I have a box of the little paperbacks in the attic and then all of the hardcovers I read as a kid. I’ve been chipping away at the Peanuts Parade series, but it’s sometimes hard to find them in good condition at a good price. I’ve gotten pretty lucky lately though.

These books are in amazing condition for being almost 50 years old and I got them for under $10 each. I was pretty happy when they arrived.

I didn’t realize Charlie Brown was older than me 😁
