What Made Christmas In the 80's So Special

Featured Replies

The Christmas Cards then were the best, beautiful and detailed. School Christmas concerts were the best. The Holiday Shows on television had to be and were always watched. This video brought back so many memories.

I'd have to add to this list that "the holidays" and the accompanying festivities were centered around the actual holidays, not what helps retailers meet their bottom line.

Nowadays you can't watch the holiday specials on tv because they're either not on at all or they are aired once the week after Thanksgiving.

Christmas years ago, from the '50s thru the '80s... but my favorite memory is when Ed was farming with his dad, and we didn't have much money to spend. So, one year, off I went to the only grocery store in town for 6 free empty soda boxes. Gluing the bottoms together back to back, I covered them with woodgrain look Contact paper. I then made clothes for their dollies from fabric scraps I had. My step-mother surprised them with Cabbage Patch type dolls she'd made, and my grandmother knit blankets for each doll too. I used fabric gifted to me by my grandmother or bought inexpensive fabric to sew each of my 3 kidlets new jammies, a dress for each daughter, pants and shirt for my son, a flannel shirt for Ed, and a dress for me. The memories of those days are still very precious!

christmas cards taped around the archway, Swiss colony order arriving 2 weeks before Christmas, watching the tree lights while making them shine better by letting eyes go out of focus, and those beat-to-hell-but hanging in there-peacock ornaments

I miss receiving the Christmas cards, they were so beautiful. Today you have to really look to find cards that are actually seasonal and carry the true message of the Season. I miss the commercials that told a little story while displaying their product, Folgers Coffee, the Budweiser Christmas commercials with the Clydesdale horses and decorated wagon come to mind, The way downtown Stores decorated their display windows and radio stations played Christmas music through the New Year.

I keep the Swiss Colony tradition going in my house. I usually get some petit fours and then let each one of the kids pick what they want.

Though he had that weird eating disorder where he was skinny all year and then gorged on Christmas Eve. 😁

The best animated Santa in my opinion.

This Christmas movie may not have been made in the 1980’s but it’s a good movie. Who doesn’t like Sam Elliott?
