  1. I hate to be too cynical, but I can’t help but worry that it’s possible Chemung County has as much of this as Steuben and Bradford Counties.....and we only see more reports from those places because they’re doing a better job of investigating and prosecuting.
  2. If I'm recalling correctly, there was another Corning facility in Kentucky that recently added jobs/production. When a nearly 200 year old Fortune 500 company with deep roots to its HQ community chooses to promote its job growth everywhere except their own backyard...i seems crystal clear that NYS is openly hostile to business.
  3. Thanks. Let us know what the deal is...I feel like I must be missing something. That positioning just doesn't look right to me, but I didn't think it was worth questioning it on FB and fueling the fire. LOL
  4. Can someone explain why this sign appears to be on the wrong side? If the images angle is the back side of the sign, it should be located on the other side of Broad St at point "A".... If we're looking at the front side of the sign, it should be over on the righthand side of Grand Central at point "B". I don't disagree that it needs a 4-way stop. However, the biggest objection seems to be that drivers on Grand Central will overlook a "new" sign. And putting a new sign on the wrong side of the road is a good way for drivers to overlook it.
  5. My understanding is that they added a few locations/races...and shuffled a bunch to make room for the new ones.
  6. Yep....Catlin had drama and debate over banning windfarms....and found out that under the " Article 10 Process" there is a state committee responsible for approving all utility/power generation regardless of local Home Rule. Although they knew it could/would be overridden if any proposal plans came along....Catlin passed the local law anyway "banning" wind farms as a symbolic gesture to quiet the activists that were monopolizing every meeting. LOL As of now.....that specific Article 10 process applies to power generation sites, and I don't know if there's already a another law that covers data centers. But one party controls Albany with a super-majority, so they can/could pass a new law whenever they want. But....That doesn't affect my point that these places didn't need any impending reason when they tried to ban wind/solar. Most were 'preemptive' strikes against what they were afraid might happen. And personally, I support some of the arguments that the need to bring data centers into the US outweighs the fears/risks of having data centers nearby. Relying on Chinese data centers for "all the things" is pretty scary. It's not hyperbole to say the CCP could flip a few switches and shut down (and/or corrupt) a dangerous amount of critical things that we increasingly rely on.
  7. Howard Johnson's stayed a long time before Friendly's took it over. And I was only five....but I'm certain I remember a Red Barn on the Southside when I lived here around the 1972 flood. It was gone by the time I moved back in the mid-80s.
  8. I don't recall Ground Round....but I thought that spot was The Rusty Nail before it was Hannibal's (and then briefly a bar with a volleyball pit right before Applebee's came along)
  9. In the past few months, I keep hearing reports on the Ithaca radio station about town boards passing zoning laws prohibiting data centers and crypto-mining without any mentioning a specific concern/catalyst for it. It's like they just want to “protect the environment”. (examples: Dryden, Danby, and Ulysses) So, I feel like it’s becoming kind of trendy for some local politicians to think they’re being “proactive” and taking a stand like a lot of municipalities were for wind and solar farms a few years ago.
  10. Not sure I understand this. Is there some proposal in front of the planning or zoning board for a data center? Otherwise, it seems like considering/approving any concepts would take way longer than 18 month anyway. So the idea of "banning" something that no one is even doing just seems like an emotional outburst.
  11. Yep. Like the Repair Cafes ...they would get much better participation by holding regular events instead random, intermittent scheduling. Especially since it seems like they do offer this at least a couple of times a year with different "partner" organizations. Last winter state reps (O'Mara. Palmesano and Friend) sent out invitations with instructions on how to register online.
  12. At its inception, this was a major part of the business model that made malls a popular trend. It built on the tried and true marketing/retail approach known as the "loss leader" strategy. From ample free parking to regular events and exhibits.....Malls offered "free" benefits that downtown shopping lacked. The costs to provide those free benefits was more than paid back by drawing traffic that supported their primary revenue (prosperous retail tenants). Basically the same concept as a bar investing in a band. Unlike a concert venue where the ticket sales are the primary "product"........the bar band is a "loss leader" whose purpose is to get customers to show up and buy drinks. The Mall's primary revenue (tenant leases) started taking a hit once they abandoned the "loss leader" model by trying to turn the free benefits into additional revenue streams.
  13. Maintenance factors are likely what fully tanked it. When I worked at Radio Shack in the late 90s they were already failing. Just tossing orange cones all over the corridors instead of addressing leaky roofs and broken tiles, etc. Some AC units were non-functional for months/years (JC Penney was intolerable at times). I also remember when Rex was allowed to move in, Radio Shack corporate was fighting them for violating the non-compete clause that had been around since the beginning.
  14. I can only recall being there once since the pandemic....for the car show late on a Friday afternoon. That should generally be one of the busiest times in a week for traffic. Only about a third of the businesses were open.....even a good share of places still in business were closed for the day before 5pm. It was creepy. Arnot Realty is an extremely wealthy corporation that has plenty of resources to improve the Mall on their own. The Mall's current state of disrepair is a reflection of their own business choices. As much as I'd like to see the location brought back to life, I really hope the CCIDA and/or STEG don't divert any funds to support it (or to support any projects that past/current STEG/CCIDA board members, sponsors and investors hold a stake in).
  15. I can’t verify or say for sure (I don’t feel like finding keywords to look up. LOL)......but I feel like I’ve heard/read that those happens to some wild sheep or goats. But I got the impression that it’s not very common, as most die of so many other perils before “stabbed by your own horn” makes it into the dead pool stats. I figured nature allows it because if they live long enough for it to happen, then they’ve probably gone past their practical life expectancy. And since that’s probably well after prime reproductive age, then evolution dgaf because the species has already been propagated.
