On July 6, 2026, the New York State Police arrested a Bath woman following an investigation into the neglect of two cats that were left inside a residence in the village of Painted Post.

At approximately 5:36 p.m., New York State Police responded to 109 Willow Circle after receiving a report that two cats had been abandoned inside a residence following the tenant's eviction several months earlier.

Upon entering the residence with the property manager, Troopers located two cats hiding beneath a bed. The residence was found in unsanitary condition with animal feces throughout the home, no visible source of water, and excessive heat inside due to the lack of electrical service or air conditioning. One of the cats was observed panting heavily and drooling, consistent with heat-related distress.

The cats were safely removed from the residence and transported to the Finger Lakes SPCA in Bath, where they were surrendered into the care of shelter staff for evaluation and treatment.

The investigation determined that 41 year old Ashley A. Wright of Bath owned the cats and had left them inside the residence after being evicted. 

Wright was arrested and charged with:

Two counts of Agriculture and Markets Law § 353 – Overdriving, Torturing and Injuring Animals; Failure to Provide Proper Sustenance  (A misdemeanor)

She was processed at the State Police barracks in Painted Post and issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Campbell Town Court on August 10, 2026.

The New York State Police are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred early Sunday morning at the intersection of State Route 224 and State Route 13 in the town of Cayuta, Schuyler County. 

New York State Police report that on July 5, 2026, at approximately 4:58 a.m., State Police from Dundee and Montour Falls responded to a report of a serious personal injury motor vehicle crash at the intersection. 

The preliminary investigation determined that a 2023 Tesla, operated by a 25-year-old, was traveling northbound on State Route 224 when it failed to stop for a red traffic signal and entered the intersection. The Tesla was struck by an eastbound 2023 Dodge Charger, operated by 52 year old Bryan J Woodworth of Elmira, who was traveling on State Route 13 with a green traffic signal. 

The Tesla was occupied by four individuals. A passenger who was seated in the rear of the vehicle was pronounced dead at Robert Packer Hospital. 

The operator of the Tesla sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries and was transported from Guthrie Corning Hospital to Robert Packer Hospital for additional treatment. Two passengers were also transported to Robert Packer Hospital, one for serious life-threatening injuries and one was evaluated and reported to have no apparent injuries. 

The operator of the Dodge Charger was transported to Arnot Ogden Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries. 

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing. State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and Forensic Identification Unit responded to assist with the investigation. 
 

ITHACA, N.Y — The Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance will soon descend upon the Village of Trumansburg.

The annual festival will run from July 16 through July 19, bringing bands from around the world and thousands of attendees to the Trumansburg Fairgrounds for an event that’s been compared to a new-age Woodstock and a large family reunion.

At GrassRoots anything can happen. Sometimes, sunrise after parties materialize creekside at nearby Rabbit Run. One could fall in love, crash land on a stranger’s campsite or end up dancing on stage with world-class musicians.

The festival will bring back acts by the legendary blues artist Taj Mahal, the beloved Keith Frank & The Soileau Zydeco Band, the Byrne Brothers and more.

This week the town of Corning saw two resignations, one guilty felony plea and two emergency appointments to keep the town running.

Republican Town Supervisor Jenniffer Mullen resigned Monday night in an email to the board.

Deputy Town Supervisor Stuart Sammis resigned Tuesday afternoon in an email to the town board, just minutes after Mullen pleaded guilty in Steuben County court.

Mullen—who also goes by the name Jenniffer Tuttle—pleaded guilty to a felony charge of offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree. She was arrested last June.

Town Clerk Kathleen Morrow-Olmstead, a Democrat, was the person who found Mullen’s letter from the Department of Labor claiming unemployment that triggered the investigation and ultimately led to her arrest and conviction.

Morrow-Olmstead said she made the right decision.

“This is a blessing in disguise for us,” said Morrow-Olmstead. “I consider what's happening to her- she brought on herself. We didn't make her file those papers. I found the papers in the mail, and I turned them over where I thought they had to be, and I still feel okay about that.”

The three remaining town board members, Republican Mike Brenning and Democrats Lauren Gaige and Linda Schock, called for an emergency meeting Tuesday to make sure the town was protected and to prevent any disruption to day-to-day operations.

SAYRE - Guthrie nurses will have expanded access to education, certifications and career development resources through the newly established C&N Nursing Professional Development Fund — made possible by a $50,000 commitment from Wellsboro-based C&N Bank.

SAYRE — Union Pacific’s Big Boy 4014, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, is expected to spend Thursday night in Sayre by the old train station on North Lehigh Avenue before making its way into Owego Friday morning for a public viewing.

Though Thursday’s stop isn’t designated a public event, the train’s arrival is rumored to bring thousands of spectators into Sayre for the once-in-a-lifetime sight.

This is the first time Big Boy has steamed across the Mississippi River and into the Ohio Valley since it was built in Schenectady, N.Y., and delivered to Union Pacific Railroad.

wenty-five Big Boys were commissioned exclusively for Union Pacific, the first of which was delivered in 1941.

These massive locomotives — 133 feet long and weighing 1.2 million pounds — were built to haul heavy equipment in support of the war effort, normally operating between Ogden, Utah, and Cheyenne, Wyoming.

No. 4014 was retired in Dec. 1961, after traveling 1,031,205 miles.

Steuben County placed a six-month moratorium on new permits for biosolids production and use last month.

In 2023, Thurston became the first town in the state to ban the use of sewage sludge, also called biosolids, as fertilizer. Since then, town officials and residents have urgedcounty leadership to do the same on a much larger scale.

The Steuben County moratorium passed on May 18 and is in place until November.

Sewage sludge is a byproduct from wastewater treatment plants and is a combination of human and industrial waste.

This week, Amazon announced a multibillion-dollar agreement with Corning Incorporated, a leading manufacturer of advanced glass and fiber optic technology, to supply the optical fiber, cable, and connectivity solutions that power Amazon's expanding data center infrastructure across the United States. The investment will create 1,000 new, highly skilled jobs at Corning's manufacturing facilities across North Carolina, and support hundreds of additional construction jobs to expand Corning’s facilities.

Through the agreement, Amazon will work with Corning on a new program that will expand its Fiber Optic Technician Training Program with Catawba Valley Community College to train students for careers in fiber optic manufacturing and related technical roles. The program provides hands-on education and courses that will increase the talent pool and offer pathways to high-paying technical roles. The efforts will help strengthen the domestic supply chain and U.S. manufacturing base while serving the region and state to help expand residential and commercial fiber densification efforts.

SAYRE - Guthrie Hospice Pennsylvania will host a free summer camp experience next week for children coping with the death of a loved one.  

Good Grief Day Camp allows children ages 6 through 18 opportunities to work through their feelings of loss. Through play, art, music and activities, the goal of this day camp experience is to help kids understand those feelings are normal, to celebrate the life of the person who has died and learn coping skills.  

 The camp is supported by Guthrie Hospice and Bradford County Mental Health.

The New York State Police in Painted Post arrested a Corning man following an investigation into a reported menacing incident in the town of Lindley.

 New York State Police say on June 2, 2026, at approximately 2:13 p.m., State Police from Painted Post responded to River Road in Lindley for a report of a dispute involving a weapon.

 The investigation determined that a verbal altercation occurred between family members. During the incident, the suspect allegedly displayed a hammer and threatened the victim, causing the victim to fear physical injury. Troopers recovered a metal hammer from the property and secured it as evidence.

 As a result of the investigation, 28 year old Calyx Angelo Estep of Corning was arrested and charged with:

• Menacing 2nd degree (A misdemeanor)

• Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd degree – Previous Conviction (D felony)

 Estep was transported to the Painted Post barracks for processing before being taken to the Steuben County Jail for centralized arraignment.

SAYRE — A transformational gift from Ken and Caroline Taylor will put three new ambulances on the road for Guthrie Emergency Medicine Services — including a state-of-the-art critical care unit built to deliver hospital-level care during patient transport in rural communities. 

The donation funds the purchase of one critical care ambulance and two traditional ambulances, expanding Guthrie's capacity to reach patients faster and provide the right level of care before they ever arrive at the hospital. 

A centerpiece of the investment is the critical care ambulance, which will serve as a mobile extension of hospital-level care. Staffed by a specialized clinical response team and equipped with advanced medical technology, the unit is designed to provide continuous, high-acuity care during transport — a capability that can be lifesaving in rural areas where travel time to a hospital can significantly affect outcomes.

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on May 22, 2026, Deputies of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office arrested 69 year old James A. Byrnside of Hornby following an investigation of a loose dog which appeared to be malnourished.

Sheriff Allard says three dogs were removed from the residence by the Hornby Dog Control Officer and the New York State Police to receive emergency treatment at an animal treatment center. Sheriff’s Office Investigators conducted an investigation into the alleged maltreatment of the animals. It is alleged that Byrnside failed to provide proper care or sustenance for three dogs at his residence.

Byrnside was charged with three counts of Torturing or Injuring an Animal. He was released on an appearance ticket to appear in Hornby Town Court.

WAVERLY — The restrooms at Waverly Glen are closed until further notice, and after that, may be locked outside of certain hours after costly vandalism took place sometime Monday.

Mayor Keith Correll said the damage is pretty extensive, and it’s expected that it will be expensive to fix.

“This is going to cost us a ton of money — they stuffed clothes down the toilets,” he said. “So, they have to snake the pipes all the way out, because anything could be stuck in there.”

Correll said that the vandals also knocked toilet paper and soap dispensers down, and smeared human waste all over the facility.

According to the Schuyler County Sheriff's Department, on Monday at around 6:20 pm the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Dispatch Center received a call reporting a bomb threat with hostages at a residence on County Road 11 in Alpine.

The Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police and Watkins Glen Police responded and quickly set up a perimeter, as a precaution some residences were requested to leave their home for their safety. A request for New York State Police Explosives Unit was made and once on scene it was quickly determined that there was no threat of explosives in the area.

Investigation determined that the incident reported was false and the investigation continues.

A Sayre man was arrested after police say he grabbed a woman by her neck and struck her head against multiple objects during a domestic dispute that took place Monday night.

41 year old Zachary T. Atkinson was arrested and charged with felony charges of strangulation and aggrivated assault as well as harassment, making terroristic threats, possession of drugs and drug paraphenilia and simple assault.

Police were called to a location in Athens and were advised by dispatch that a man could be heard threatening to kill the alleged victim. When police arrived, she told them that Atkinson had been trashing the house and breaking items, including her cell phone, which initially prevented her from calling for help. She used her smart watch to contact 911. She further told police that he had been drinking and snorting pills.

Police say that Atkinson had blood on his hands, but no visible injuries to himself, and that the blood matched the victim's account of how he had allegedly attacked her.

When police took him into custody, Atkinson reportedly told them that the woman was a "crazy meth head" and that he was the victim in this stituation.

He was remanded to the Bradford County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court on June 2nd.

At a ceremony in the Legislative Office Building at the state capital on Tuesday, State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) and his Senate colleagues inducted Denis E. Oliver, a well-known and longtime Service Officer for the Steuben County Veterans’ Service Agency, into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame.

 Oliver, a United States Air Force veteran, represented O’Mara’s 58th Senate District and joined approximately 60 other veterans from throughout the state inducted into the Hall of Fame on Tuesday.

 O’Mara and his Senate colleagues saluted Oliver for a lifetime of distinguished military and civilian service.

 “Denis Oliver served our nation with distinction and then devoted his life’s work to looking out for veterans and their families across Steuben County and throughout New York State," O'Mara said. "Denis has offered an unwavering commitment to the critical work of ensuring that veterans and their families receive the programs and services they deserve, need, and have earned. He is well known and respected for always being there for our veterans and for always going above and beyond to provide assistance. His compassion, excellence, pride, and respect have been a lifeline to countless veterans and families whose quality of life has been improved and strengthened because of Denis. It is a great honor to have this opportunity to induct Denis Oliver into the Senate Veterans Hall of Fame, through which we hope to ensure that military service to our nation and civilian commitment to our local communities and veterans will always be remembered. Denis has impacted the lives of so many veterans and families throughout our region and state, and I am proud to express our collective gratitude and respect for his service.”

Oliver was nominated for this year’s Hall of Fame class by Randy Metz of Bath, also a United States Air Force veteran who has known and worked with Oliver for more than two decades on various veterans-related endeavors.

“It was my distinct honor and privilege to nominate Denis for the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame," said Metz. "His involvement with our community and especially veterans is second to none. We have worked on many veteran-centric events together and his commitment is outstanding. He is respected throughout our community as the answer man for veteran questions. He is an advisor and a wealth of knowledge for veterans-based programs that serve their needs. He always provides needed information and a path forward to help. He always goes well above to take care of ALL people. I am always impressed with his many hours, days, and years of commitment. He never says no and is recognized as the authority for all veteran issues and questions. It was my honor to nominate him for this prestigious award. I was so happy and impressed when Senator O’Mara called me with his selection. Many deserve this honor, and Denis is among those.”

Born and raised in Byron, Michigan, after graduating from high school Oliver enlisted in the United States Air Force. From 1981 to 1985, he served as an Aircraft Armaments System Specialist, stationed at bases in Hahn (Germany) and Loring (Maine), achieving the rank of Senior Airman. He earned numerous military awards including the Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, and the Eighth Air Force Award for Excellence.

 Following his honorable discharge, Oliver settled in Steuben County, where he discovered his calling in 2004 upon joining the Steuben County Veterans’ Service Agency as a Service Officer. He became widely known for an unwavering commitment to going the extra mile counseling and assisting area veterans and their families navigate state and federal programs and services in education, employment, financial aid, health care, housing, job training, and vocational rehabilitation and outreach, among others. Throughout this time, he was a valued mentor to other Service Officers.

 From 2019 until his retirement in 2024, Oliver worked as a NYS Department of Veterans Services Advisor (VSA) assisting, advising, and advocating for veterans’ rights and benefits.

 He is a past President of the County Veterans Service Officers Association of NYS and received the Theodore S. Coleman Memorial Service Officer of the Year award from the American Legion Department of New York in 2011.

 His deep-rooted and longstanding commitment to veterans extends to his work with numerous local, regional, and state veterans initiatives and organizations, including the American Legion, NYS Elks Association, Bath VA Museum, and Bath National Cemetery, where he serves on the Wreaths Across America Planning Committee.

 The Senate established its online Veterans Hall of Fame in 2005 and, including this year, has inducted more than 1,000 veterans from throughout New York. The Hall salutes New York veterans for their service in the United States Armed Forces and their civilian accomplishments. State Senators annually select one veteran to represent their respective legislative districts.

On Sunday while monitoring traffic at the Dandy located on Spring Street in Sayre, a Sayre Police officer noticed an individual in a truck who he described as actiing evasive and seemed bothered by police presence. When the officer ran the truck's registration, it came back to someone associated with 41 year old William J. Champluvier of Elmira. The officer further discovered that Champluvier was wanted on a warrant for burglary charges in Chemung County.

When the officer approached him, Champluvier fled to the truck he was driving and got inside. Believing that he was reaching for something dangerous, the officer drew his weapon and ordered Champluvier out of the vehicle and on to the ground, which he did without further resistance.

Other area police arrived to assis tand when a search of the truck was done, police found methamphetamine, smoking devices and other narcotics paraphernalia.

Champluvier was taken to the Sayre Police station. There he was charged with one count each of resisting arrest, intentional possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while license is suspended or revoked. He was remanded to the Bradford County Correctional Facility on $100,000 bail and awaits extradition to New York.

A Steuben County woman has been charged following an investigation into an animal neglect case.

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on May 18, 2026, Investigators and Deputies of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office arrested 54 year old Sheri L. King of Cohocton following a report of animal neglect.

Sheriff Allard says that on April 24th , 2026, the Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at the residence of Ms. King, revealing over thirty animals in various states of malnourishment and maltreatment. It is alleged that Ms. King failed to properly house, feed or water the animals over a period of time, resulting in multiple serious health issues to the dogs.

All animals were removed by the Finger Lakes SPCA and Hornell Humane Society for treatment.

King is charged with 34 counts of Overdriving, Torturing and Injuring Animals; Failure to Provide Proper Sustenance. She was released on an appearance ticket to return to the Avoca Town Court.

Sheriff Allard thanks the Finger Lakes SPCA, Hornell Humane Society, Bath Veterinary Hospital, Avoca Town Code Enforcement and Avoca Town Dog Control for their assistance in this investigation.

The Corning-Painted Post Area School District (C-PP) presented its 2026-2027 budget proposal to the public for comment earlier this week.

The budget is $150,709,245 million. It is $6.4 million dollars above last year’s budget. This budget includes a 2.56 percent tax levy, which is within the state tax cap. That means it requires a 50 plus 1 percent simple majority at the polls. The tax rate is nearly $19.80 per $1,000 of assessed property value.

According to budget documents, salaries and benefits make up 66 percent of the overall district expenditures.

The largest revenue streams for the district are state aid at 49 percent and the tax levy at 42 percent.

The district is still waiting for New York’s final state budget as are all school districts in the state. The budget was due at the beginning of April.

On Saturday, just after 12 p.m., New York State Police at Owego responded to a crash involving an SUV and a motorcycle on Owego Road (State Route 96) in the town of Candor.

The investigation revealed that a Ford SUV was traveling south on Owego Road and a Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling north on Owego Road. The 88-year-old operator of the Ford SUV failed to observe the motorcycle and began making a left turn into Iron Kettle Farms directly into the path of the motorcycle.  The operator of the motorcycle was unable to avoid the SUV and struck the SUV.

The operator of the SUV was transported by ambulance to Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital to be evaluated and is in stable condition.  

The operator of the motorcycle was transported by LifeNet to Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation is on-going.

The New York State Police in Bath, with the assistance of the Bath Police Department, arrested two Corning residents following a traffic stop in the town of Bath that resulted in the seizure of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

Police say on May 10, 2026, at approximately 2:51 p.m., a State Trooper observed a 2003 Suzuki traveling on County Route 11 in the town of Bath with an expired inspection. A traffic stop was initiated near I-86.

During the investigation, the driver and passenger provided conflicting accounts regarding their destination. The driver, identified as 47 year old Richard C. Eygabroat, of Corning, consented to a search of the vehicle. Troopers subsequently located approximately nine grams of suspected methamphetamine, packaging material, and digital scales containing residue consistent with methamphetamine.

As a result of the investigation, Eygabroat was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd degree (B felony), Criminal Use Drug Paraphernalia 2nd (A misdemeanor), and Operating a Motor Vehicle without an Inspection Certificate (Violation)

The passenger, 50 year old Julie B. Sweeney, also of Corning, was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd degree (B felony) and Criminal Use Drug Paraphernalia 2nd (A misdemeanor)

Both subjects were transported to Steuben County Jail for CAP arraignment. 

The New York State Police in Painted Post announce the arrest of a Campbell man following an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse involving a child under the age of 11.

Police say that on May 6, 2026, State Police in Painted Post received a report alleging that 37-year-old David J. Brooker, of Campbell, NY, had inappropriate sexual contact with a juvenile victim. As a result of the investigation, Brooker was arrested on May 7, 2026, and charged with:

• Sexual Abuse 1st degree (D Felony)
• Endangering the Welfare of a Child (A Misdemeanor)

The investigation determined that the incidents occurred in the town of Campbell, Steuben County.

Brooker was processed at SP Painted Post and transported to the Steuben County Jail pending arraignment. Orders of Protection were requested on behalf of the juvenile victim. The New York State Police were assisted by Steuben County Child Protective Services and the Child Advocacy Center.

This investigation remains ongoing.

A heavy presence of emergency responders and an army of volunteers from both New York and Pennsylvania are actively searching for a missing 18-year-old in Tioga County.

Dalton G. Malmstrom was last seen leaving his residence in the 2100 block of East River Road, near the Susquehanna River in the town of Nichols, at approximately 7:45 a.m. on May 9, 2026. Family members report he was not acting like himself prior to leaving.

Dalton is described as a 5-foot-10 male with dark hair and was last seen wearing a dark-colored shirt. The attached photo is a current image of Dalton.

ATHENS TOWNSHIP, PA – On Thursday, May 7, 2026, an Athens, PA man was arrested after the Pennsylvania State Police Northeast Computer Crime Task Force executed a search warrant at his residence located in the 1200 block of Front Street in Athens Township, Bradford County, PA. Multiple electronic devices were seized from the residence. Investigators located numerous image and video files depicting child sexual abuse material on multiple devices (allegedly) belonging to 33-year-old Casey Ryan Seymour of Athens, PA. 

Seymour was taken into custody and charged with the following;

• 10 counts of 18 PACS 6312 D – Sexual Abuse of Children – (First Degree Felony).

• 3 counts of 18 PACS 6312 C – Sexual Abuse of Children – (First Degree Felony).

• 1 count of 18 PACS 7512 A – Criminal Use of a Communication Facility – (Third Degree Felony).

A preliminary arraignment was conducted by MDJ Larry Hurley.  Bail was set at $250,000. Seymour could not make the bail and is currently incarcerated at the Bradford County Correctional Facility. 

A preliminary hearing is currently scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 830 AM. Seymour is a registered sexual offender who was previously convicted of Sexual Abuse of Children and Indecent Assault. 

The following agencies assisted with the investigation: Pennsylvania State Police Towanda barracks, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Lycoming County District Attorney’s Office Detective Unit and Williamsport Police Department.
