This is another nice, locally owned theater.

It was 8.00 per adult for a 3:00 matinee, concessions were reasonably priced. We got two medium sodas and a small popcorn which only came up to $16 I believe. So once again, we enjoyed a movie for the price of two tickets to a corporate theater.

The theaters are upstairs, but there is an elevator available for those who need it. As you can see, they're on the smaller side, I think 90 seats or so. The seats are pretty comfortable. Bathrooms are a little bit of a hike from the theaters, so plan your pit stops accordingly during the movie.

The staff was very friendly.

Overall I'd say it was a good experience and we'd go back there again.

Ever since the closing of our beloved Heights Theater, I haven’t really looked forward going to the movies like before. Sure, the mall theater has those big comfy chairs, but in addition to the ridiculous prices, the experience just weren’t quite the same.

Today we went to see the new Star Wars movie at the Sayre Theater, which we’ve been wanting to try for a while now. Let me tell you, this is our new place to go.

We caught the matinee ( $10 per adult ) and got two medium drinks with a medium popcorn for under $40.

Staff was very friendly and informed us that they’d recently lowered their popcorn prices. Small theaters don’t make their money on admission, particularly with first-run movies, they make money on concessions. So even if the prices were a little more I wouldn’t have minded.

Inside the theater, it felt a LOT like being at the Heights Theater. A smaller screen above a stage surrounded by an old timey look:

Parking is on street, but there’s plenty of that to be found, especially around Howard Elmer Park, just across the street.

Overall it was a great experience and with several other movies on our “must watch” list, we’ll be going back a lot this summer. Plus, they’re doing some viewings of It’s A Wonderful Life for the film’s 80th anniversary this December. We plan on going to that as well.

If you enjoy movies and want to support a small, non-corporate theater, I highly recommend the Sayre Theater.

I absolutely hate this store.

Once upon a time, it was a nice store. But it seems like when they closed the S. Main Street location, the Southport store took a nosedive.

The immediate interior of the store is gross and needs a makeover.

Their produce absolutely sucks. You have to pick through stuff that's obviously past the good stage to find something worth buying. Even then, they must have special lighting that makes it look good, because it appears to start going bad the moment you leave the store.

They're always understaffed and I've gotten used to having to bag my own groceries. More often than not, in the morning, there's only one lane open. I actually saw a morning where they had NO ONE on a register and it took forever to get someone to realize, "Hey, we're supposed to be selling food here!" and open up.

This morning, on a FRIDAY MORNING at 8 am, there's one lane open and the lady ahead of me with a full cart is playing on her phone instead of unleading her cart. And then, when it started looking like she was paying in seperate orders, I took my cart to the self-checkout line. "20 items or less"? F--k you. Say something to me about it and I'll walk out, leaving the whole cart here for you to put back on the shelves. Not to mention, I'd be doing everything else anyway, might as well ring out my own stuff too.

It's the second time I've had to do that if I wanted any hope of getting out of there in a timely manner.

The only reason I go there, at least for now, is because they closed the Big Flats location. Honest to God, I would drive the 12 miles right past the Southport store to go there. And Wegmans, the only other grocery storee in town, gives me anxiety. But it's looking more and more like I'm gonna have to get over it, because I am sick to death of Tops in Southport.

( I do want to note, there are one or two good people at this store still, though I haven't seen one of them in a while. Maybe she got sick of the place too. )

We've never rented a dumpster before, but this year we decided it was time to do a heavy clean out of our house and garage. I'd seen Clark's dumpsters all over the place in the past year or two and since they're a locally owned company, decided to try their service. I'm glad we did.

Everything is done online if you want. You can choose which size you need and you'll see what it costs. They offer a list of what they do and do not take as well as extra costs if you're disposing of certain items. We got one that was slightly larger than what we needed ( though we did come close to filling it ) and I think the price was quite reasonable. I had a question about a couple of items and Nick got back to me very quickly, even offering a discounted price. As it turns out we didn't put them on the dumpster, but the offer is still appreciated.

Speaking of getitng back to me, what I like most is the communication. The night before drop-off I got a reminder to make sure they could get the truck in. When it was on its way, another reminder. Then reminders the night before pick up.

These guys got that little extra in the name of customer service. I definitely recommend Clark's if you need a dumpster.

For the longest time, I missed reading an honest to God newspaper. Yeah, you can get your news online now, but it's not the same. Unfortunately, the Star Gazette is expensive and doesn't have enough there to line a parakeet cage with anymore. So last fall I took a chance on the Sayre Morning Times. They report a lot of stuff from down in The Valley of course, but there's still the occasional news item from Chemung, Van Etten, Baldwin etc.

Even when there isn't news about Chemung County, it's interesting to read stories about what's going on in the small towns in the region.

They only publish Tuesday through Saturday, so you won't get that big thick Sunday paper we all remember. The Saturday edition is about as close as you'll get to that, with a Tops flyer and an extra comics and puzzles section thrown in.

The national news items are a day old as you would expect, so often times I scan or skip over them. Still, if I only read a couple of interesting stories about local news and businesses, read Dear Abby and the comics, I call it a win. Some of the comics are stupid, not remotely funny, but I can't pin that on the paper. I wish they ran Peanuts, but oh well.

The paper is delivered by the US Postal Service. Apparently they take it to the Waverly post office, which ships it to the Elmira one and get it to us all in the same day. This usually works well, although during the holidays we missed several papers. I contacted the company and they made it right, as well as looked into the problem. Apparently a new employee didn't think that the paper needed to be sent to the address at the top. It's been a lot smoother since and we've only missed one or two papers. Again, they make it right.

It's interesting to me that the Morning Times can produce a quality newspaper like this but for some reason Gannett chooses not to put the effort in. Maybe someday a good newspaper, more local to here, will come out. But in the meantime, we're happy Morning Times subscribers.
