Elmira Police say on August 7th at around 12:01 am, officers responded to the 400 block of West 5th Street for a disturbance. While investigating the disturbance officers were advised of the possibility of a gun being involved. As a result of the investigation, officers recovered a loaded 9mm privately manufactured semi-automatic handgun, also known as a “ghost gun”, loaded with 9 live rounds of 9mm ammunition. As a result, Tremaine Woodard, no age or address given, was arrested and charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree a Class C Felony and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd Degree a Class D Felony.

Random Rural News And Chat

https://elmiratelegram.com/index.php?/topic/439-random-rural-news-and-chat/&do=findComment&comment=4283

Yeah it’s definitely a concern. I have always put the poison traps inside since by the time I notice them they are already in here and have no idea if they take it back outside or not. I watch the owls hunt and would hate for them to get a poison mouse. I don't know if owls go after the already dead ones or if half the fun is the chase.

Random Rural News And Chat

https://elmiratelegram.com/index.php?/topic/439-random-rural-news-and-chat/&do=findComment&comment=4280

I spent some time last night researching rodenticides ( “Does this guy know how to party or what?” ) that don’t cause secondary poisoning to other wildlife like owls, foxes, etc. Initially I was going to try the repeating trap style with five gallon bucket and water, but that seems pretty cruel. Although your typical rodenticide isn’t exactly a walk in the park for them. The results are kinda mixed. There’s one that sounded really promising but it isn’t approved for use in the U.S. I found another that is, and though many say it works great, is all natural ingredients, and safe for anything but rodents, some people say it doesn’t seem to be as effective. To which the response is, “It takes longer and more quantities, keep feeding it.” Which sounds great but it ain’t entirely cheap either. So I don’t know what the hell to do. While I don’t think I have a large amount of dead rodents being eaten by wildlife, making them sick, it’d be nice to know that there’s none. At the same time, we don’t have any infestation right now because of the poison I use. I’m leaning towards just doing what I’ve been doing as responsibly as possible. 🤷‍♂️

Gardening 2026

https://elmiratelegram.com/index.php?/topic/12-gardening-2026/&do=findComment&comment=4279

I spent some time in the garden over the past couple of days, starting to take inventory of what is working and what isn’t. So far I’m loving the grow bags. I got one batch of potatoes from them already and after quite a stretch am starting to see new plants popping up. I think because they’re planted a little deeper it takes longer. The carrots are chugging along as well. My cucumber plants didn’t far so well. I don’t know if it’s how planted them or if they just don’t like the heat and sun, but I ended up pulling the plants. I don’t know that I’ll plant those next year, it may be easier to just buy them in bulk for pickling. I over planted the corn, so it’s just all kind of bunched up. Next year I’ll plant the rows over the entire raised bed lengthways and put the beans somewhere else. I’ve been cutting and freezing green peppers and jalapeños all along so they’re doing fine. I’ve also cut more basil so far than I think I ever have in the past. I’m trying some new things this year and I’d say it’s been a good garden season overall. I think that water tank and the ease of watering made the difference.

Random Nostalgia

https://elmiratelegram.com/index.php?/topic/18-random-nostalgia/&do=findComment&comment=4277

These popped up on Marketplace today: We had them when we were little. It is the first time whole genomes have been successfully designed by AI. The resulting 16 novel viruses were created to infect bacteria and pose no threat to people. The breakthrough has been labelled a "very significant turning point" in science that could unlock a new era for treating disease. But experts have also warned AI-designed viruses raise "urgent" safety and security concerns. AI tools are rapidly advancing and have already been used to design new antibiotics. But that is relatively simple compared with designing a new viable virus from scratch. "This is a next step in the complexity that's designable by generative AI, this is the first time generative AI has been used to design a complete genome, it's something that can replicate and have other functions inside cells… this was new territory for us," Brian Hie, assistant professor at Stanford University, told the BBC. Source And in other, related AI news: The smarter artificial intelligence gets, the harder it will be for humanity to control it, according to Geoffrey Hinton, the Nobel Prize-winning computer scientist known as the “godfather of AI.” Even Hinton was alarmed by the sophisticated AI agents that recently caused real-world damage after escaping their human-built testing environments. “What’s happening is these things are getting smarter,” Hinton told CNN on Wednesday during a press conference at an artificial intelligence convention. “I think as they get smarter, we’re going to see more and more complex intentions they have – and more and more ability to escape control.” The problem, according to Hinton, is that humans will no longer be able to rely on outsmarting super-intelligent AI models. “I don’t believe we’re going to be able to keep control of them in the simple way of just outthinking them so they can’t escape,” Hinton said on the sidelines of Ai4, a conference in Las Vegas. Last month, the two leading frontier AI labs, OpenAI and Anthropic, disclosed that leading models they developed escaped their “sandbox” and hacked into other systems. On Wednesday, Meta similarly disclosed an AI agent that hacked into another organization’s systems. I wanted to win at everything. Over the years, I feel like I’ve gotten better at (handling defeats).” In adulthood, anger has gradually given way to devastating sorrow. Last January, after falling short of the Super Bowl for the seventh consecutive postseason, the Bills’ superstar quarterback was a puddle of tears while blaming himself for a divisional-round playoff defeat to the Denver Broncos in overtime. The scene was so jolting to Buffalo owner Terry Pegula that, at a news conference four days later, he cited it prominently while explaining his decision to fire coach Sean McDermott after nine seasons. Seven months have passed, but Allen told me he still harbors guilt for McDermott’s dismissal, saying, “I think about that all the time. There are certain plays throughout the game — and that’s going to be every game — where you’re like, ‘I could have done more.’ And I always feel like I can do more.’” Read the rest here.

Local News Bites

https://elmiratelegram.com/index.php?/topic/48-local-news-bites/&do=findComment&comment=4267

Clemens Square is getting yet another new business opening soon, this time a wood-fired pizzeria. Hopkins of Elmira for Burglary in the Second Degree, a Class C Felony, Burglary in the Third Degree, a Class D Felony, and Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, a Class D Felony. The Sheriff's Office says that April 28, 2026, the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol Division responded to an address on Mathews Road, in the Town of Baldwin, for a report of a burglary of a residence and garage on the property. After the initial investigation, the Criminal Investigations Division was contacted and took over the investigation. Upon further investigation by the Criminal Investigations Division, it was determined that on multiple occasions, Hopkins entered and stole belongings from a garage on the property, as well as the dwelling while the homeowner was not home. On May 1, 2026, an arrest warrant was obtained for Hopkins. Investigators worked in conjunction with multiple police agencies from Pennsylvania and North Carolina to determine that Hopkins had fled New York and was found to be traveling through North Carolina. Shortly thereafter, he was taken into custody by the Union County Sheriff’s Office in Monroe, North Carolina and remanded to the Union County Jail. Due to Hopkins receiving additional unrelated charges in North Carolina, he remained in the Union County Jail until August 6th. He was then extradited back to New York. Hopkins was remanded to the Chemung County Jail and will appear in the Town of Baldwin Court at a later date.

Random Rural News And Chat

https://elmiratelegram.com/index.php?/topic/439-random-rural-news-and-chat/&do=findComment&comment=4258

There’s nothing like homemade dill pickles with all that fresh dill in the jar.

NFL 2026 Season

https://elmiratelegram.com/index.php?/topic/519-nfl-2026-season/&do=findComment&comment=4254

OMG I just saw this and my heart skipped a beat: But apparently they’re treating his shoulder before and after each practice.
