Sheriff's Department Investigates ATV Accident In Big Flats

This afternoon members of the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office responded to Shady Knoll Drive located in the Town of Big Flats to investigate a personal injury accident involving an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV).

 Upon arrival Sheriff’’s Deputies learned that a ten year old female passenger was ejected off of the ATV which was being operated by thirty year old Edward F. Fitzwater Jr. of Elmira.  


Police say Fitzwater was operating the all-terrain vehicle in an easterly direction on Shady Knoll Drive at an unknown speed at the time of the incident.  The ten year old female was pinned under vehicle after the accident and had to be freed by emergency responders. She was transported to Robert Packer Hospital for treatment of head and facial injuries.

According to police, neither Fitzwater nor the ten year old were wearing helmets at the time of the incident.

The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division is continuing the investigation and charges are anticipated
