River Friends & First Transit Team Up To Offer Canoe/ Kayak Shuttle Service

Recommended Posts

Chemung River Friends and First Transit Inc. have partnered to introduce a bus and canoe/kayak trailer shuttle service to boat launches on the Chemung River from Wellsburg to Painted Post.

The Boat Launch Shuttle features a First Transit bus towing a canoe/kayak trailer that will start at the Toll Bridge Boat Launch in Wellsburg and end at the Kinsella Park Boat Launch in Painted Post. Along the way the bus and trailer will pick up paddlers and their boats and drop them off at the launch of their choice, where they will paddle back to their vehicles. Fee is $20/person.

“The biggest hassle in river paddling is dropping of your boats at the start, driving to the launch at the end of the trip, having someone follow you and then driving you back to the boats,” said River Friends Executive Director Jim Pfiffer. “You need three people for one person to do a paddle. The new Boat Launch Shuttle will solve that problem and make the river more accessible to the public for recreation, education and a visit with nature.”

All paddlers must register online in advance of each Boat Launch Shuttle trip by going to www.eventbrite.com

The Trip

A First Transit bus and canoe/kayak trailer will arrive at Toll Bridge Park Boat Launch, located off of the Lowman Crossover Road, at 9 a.m. to pick up paddlers. The shuttle will proceed upstream to six other boat launches picking up and dropping off paddlers and their boats, ending at the Kinsella Park Boat Launch in Painted Post.

Paddlers may board and/or depart the bus at any of the seven shuttle route boat launches. They will then paddle back to their vehicles.

Loading/Unloading

Paddlers are responsible for securing their boats to the trailer. First Transit and Chemung River Friends and/or their employees are not responsible for any damage due to the improper loading, unloading or securing of items.

Tie-downs, rope and bungee cords will be provided. The bus driver will supervise the loading and unloading of boats. The bus will wait 5-10 minutes at each stop to load and unload boats and passengers.

Boat passengers may bring life vests, paddles and coolers on the bus. Food and beverages may not be consumed on the bus. All safety decisions pertaining to securing all boats and personal items will be at the driver’s discretion.

At the conclusion of the morning Boat Launch Shuttle, the bus will return to the Toll Bridge Boat Launch at 1:30 and do an afternoon run ending at Kinsella Park Boat Launch around 3:30 p.m.

The Fee

The Boat Launch Shuttle fee is $20/person regardless of how far the passenger rides the bus. Passengers must pay for the trip ahead of time by registering and buying tickets online. Passengers must bring a printed ticket receipt to board the bus.
