East Avenue Bridge To Close Until November

Recommended Posts

According to State DOT officials, East Avenue Bridge in Elmira will close on Thursday May 31st and remain closed to traffic until November, approximately five months as they begin the $1.9 Million project to replace the bridge over I-86

The existing four span bridge will be demolished and replaced at the same location with a modern two span, steel girder structure. Two of the three existing concrete piers will be eliminated, which will officials say will improve safety for interstate traffic and reduce maintenance costs during the life of the new bridge. The project will also reconstruct a portion of East Avenue on each side of the new bridge.

“When completed, this new bridge will be a safe, modern structure, that will enhance the daily commute for many Elmira residents," said acting manager Paul Karas.

Local traffic will be detoured by way of Sullivan Street to Lake Road to County Route 51 aka Latta Brook Road to County Route 52 at Watercure Hill Road.

All county, town, schools and emergency services are aware.
