Police Investigate Threat At School In Steuben County

Recommended Posts

This morning at about 8:27am the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office received an anonymous tip that a student possibly had a weapon at Arkport Central School, with intent to use it against other students. The school was placed on a lockdown at approximately 8:30 a.m. as law enforcement responded. The anonymous tip line received two emails within 5 minutes this morning that an Arkport High School student had a weapon and planned to discharge it during the school’s field days event on Thursday, May 24. The school district was immediately notified and took appropriate action by placing the school on lockdown.

The Sheriff’s Office arrived shortly thereafter and requested a mental health team from the county to assist with interviewing the student, who was located at school.

After conducting interviews and a thorough search of the building and school grounds with a K-9 unit, the Sheriff’s Office concluded there was no weapon or credible threat. No weapon was found, and no students or staff were harmed.

During a lockdown, students and staff are instructed to clear hallways, lock doors and take positions out of sight until law enforcement can arrive. The lockdown was downgraded at 9:30 a.m. to a "hold in place,” which limited the movement of students and staff, and then lifted completely at 10:40 a.m., when students resumed their normal schedules.

“Thank you to everyone in the community who responded to today’s events with patience and cooperation as we navigated necessary protocols to ensure the safety and security of our students and staff,” Superintendent of Schools Jesse Harper said.

“The communication and cooperation worked flawlessly between law enforcement and the district," said Sheriff Jim Allard  We are thankful for the support of the New York State Police and the community in this investigation and are grateful that all members of the Arkport community are safe and well.”

So where did this "tip" come from?

Someone named "anonymous" needs to be held accountable for all this commotion.
