Police Investigating Fatal Car-Pedestrian Incident In Big Flats

The Chemung County Sheriffs Department is currently investigating a fatal car-pedestrian incident in the Town of Big Flats.

According to Sheriff Christopher Moss, at 11:30 a.m., Deputies from the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office 
were dispatched to Suburban Drive, in the Town of Big Flats, after receiving a report of a car-pedestrian motor vehicle collision. 

Deputies learned that 48 year old Barbara M. Velasquez of Big Flats had been walking her dog on Suburban Drive, when both she and her dog were struck and killed by a 2009 Ford dump truck owned by the Premier Landscaping Company of Elmira. 

The investigation into the incident revealed that Velasquez  had been walking in a northerly direction on Suburban Drive when the unoccupied dump truck began rolling backwards from a parked position downhill, striking her and her dog. 

The investigation into the exact cause of the incident is continuing.

The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted by the New York State Police and the District Attorney’s Office and the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team is 
currently on site.
