Joel Stephens, a graduate of Notre Dame High School, was an All-American in both football and baseball. In football Stephens rushed 4,715 career yards, which ranked fifth all-time in New York state at the time of his death. He was referred to as “the second coming of Ernie Davis” by Notre Dame Coach Mike D’Aloisio in an article for The Baltimore Sun, and was offered a football scholarship to Syracuse University.

However Stephens chose baseball for a career path. He was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the ninth round of the 1995 June draft, playing in the Orioles farm system, batting .224 for the Delmarva Shorebirds before his battle with colon cancer began.

Despite a courageous battle, Stephens died on September 30, 1998. He was only 22 years old.

He was my friend and i stilldraw inspiration from him to this day.....the last time i saw him was at that mass at St Charles.  it was my nieces confirmation mass and when i spoke to him after...he told me in no unncertain  termsthat he would be playing for Syracuse the followingseason. but in typical fashion he was more intersted in my life than tellingme about his own!  His grandfather Emmitt was agood friend aswell!!

I never knew him, but I wish I did. I have to tell ya guys, going through the articles about him was hard. I kept thinking, "This guy was the real deal." and how absolutely unfair the hand that he was dealt was.

We need more people like Joel Stephens.
