Elmira Man Arrested After Robbery On Second Street

This morning at around 8:58 am, the Elmira Police Department responded to the Dollar General located at 202 E. 2nd Street for a report of a robbery involving a knife.  The suspect had allegedly stolen an undisclosed amount of cash from the victim and fled the area.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with the victim and learned details about the suspect’s description.  Officers began to search the area for the suspect.  An officer located the suspect a short distance from the scene of the crime.  The officer ordered the suspect to stop but the suspect failed to comply with the officer’s order, fleeing on foot and the officer gave chase. 

Police say the pursuit traversed several blocks of the west side south neighborhood, the suspect observed jumping over several fences between yards.  The suspect was eventually apprehended in a back yard in the 300 block of W. Water Street.  He was transported to the Detective Bureau for questioning.

The suspect was identified as 24 year old Vashon D Chess of Elmira.  Chess was charged with Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd (Class A Misdemeanor) and Assault 2nd (Class D Felony).

An Elmira Police Officer was injured during the course of the pursuit.  Police say the identity of the officer will not be released nor will the specifics of what is described as a "non-life threatening injury".

The following agencies assisted during the pursuit:  New York State Police, New York State Parole, Chemung County Sheriff’s Office and the West Elmira Police Department.

The original victim did not wish to file charges, according to police. 

Chess is currently being held in the Elmira Police City Lock up pending arraignment in Elmira City Court.
