Elementary Schools In Elmira Now Serving Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Snacks

Recommended Posts

With funds from the USDA, the Elmira City School District is now offering free fresh fruits and vegetables as a snack to elementary students in six buildings throughout the District. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, teachers serve the fruit or vegetable in their classroom and enjoy the snack with students, acting as role models for healthy eating.

“Kids eat more fruits and vegetables, when more fruits and vegetables are offered! Fruits and vegetables are the foods that provide the healthy fuel our minds need to learn and grow. And that’s why we are excited to have recently introduced a Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program for enrolled students in six of our elementary buildings,” says Kari Crouse, Supervisor of Food Services for the GST Boces.

The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) began on September 11 in Elmira and is an USDA federally assisted program providing free fresh fruits and vegetables to elementary children twice a week during the school day. The goals of the FFVP are to introduce children to fresh fruits and vegetables including new and different varieties, encourage healthy snacking, and to increase overall acceptance and consumption of fresh, unprocessed produce among children.

Pretty cool idea. Sadly, it will probably be the only place some of those kids will get taught nutrition by example.
