Horseheads Schools Temporarily Placed On "Lockout" Due To Nearby Robbery

Recommended Posts

Horseheads School District went on "lockout" mode this morning after police say a man robbed a nearby Rite Aid store.

According to Horseheads Police Chief Thomas Stickler, at approximately 10 a.m. a man entered the Rite Aid Store located at 2144 Grand Central Ave in Horseheads.  He is described as a black male, tall – 6’3”, thin build, facial hair, wearing a blue hoodie, blue jeans, blue baseball cap with an American flag on the front, white t shirt and black sneakers.

Police say after a few minutes in the store, the subject jumped over the pharmacy counter, grabbed a small amount of a liquid controlled substance and fled out the front door on foot, last seen running westbound on Grand Central Avenue.

No one was injured or threatened and no weapon was displayed, Stickler says.  The Horseheads High School and Center Street Elementary school were briefly placed on “Lockout” as a precautionary measure due to the proximity of the event.

"Lockout"  means the inside of the school is safe, but no one is allowed to enter or leave the school. The lockout was lifted shortly before noon.

The Horseheads Police Department was assisted at the scene by Elmira Heights Police, New York State Police and the Chemung County Sheriff’s Department.  Anyone with any information is requested to contact the Horseheads Police Department at 607.739.5669.
