At an event to be held this evening, Democrat Christopher Callas will formally announce his candidacy for the Chemung County 8th Legislative District seat.

Callas, who ran for Elmira Heights Village Trustee earlier this year, currently serves on the Elmira Heights Board of Education. He is also a member of the Elmira Elks Club and Cashmere Grotto.

"I believe we need a strong voice who will stand up for our concerns and needs,' he writes on his Facebook page. "We deserve better than the Republican agenda we have currently and I’m asking for your vote."

Callas will face incumbent Republican Peggy Woodard or Frank Cicci who are separated by 5 votes in last week's primary. Pending a count of absentee ballots, ElmiraTelegram.com has yet to declare winner in that race.

Tonights event will be held at J&Bs Bulldog Barbeque Café located at 102 W 14th St. in Elmira Heights from 6-8pm

Not much of a platform.

I'm told that even if Cicci stays in the lead after the official count, Woodard will be on the Conservative line, setting up a possible 3 way run in the 8th.

Am I guessing correctly that he's looking for write-in votes?

I'm not clear on how this works. I don't see where it says what line he's running on...and after the primary seems a little late to get on any party ticket.

He's been campaigning all Summer from what I can tell. I thought he was a Democrat and didn't have a primary opponent. But then I also thought he'd already alsonnounced his candidacy before last night as well, so...
