About Jerry Falletta

  1. Sheriff’s Department Investigating Death Of Inmate At County Jail

Who wants to bet it had nothing to do with kayaking. https://paddling.com/learn/boofing/
  2. Rave: Doug's Fish Fry

Doug Clark is a genius... when he opened his first restaurant in Skaneateles, it was an instant hit (and has remained as such). One of the guys from the local EMS squad told me that any time Doug's ran out of anything, he would donate the price of that (i.e., a case of napkins was ~$25.00) item to the squad. Their Cortland place is fifteen minutes from where I live; I stop there every so often for a quick fish meal... good stuff, indeed!
  3. Five Star Clinic

Urgent Care centers are often the best choice for non-critical stuff. When I worked at the hospital (CMC) many patients who came to the ER told me they wished we had a Convenient/Urgent Care facility on the west side of the lake. While we designated the first few beds to quick cases and quick turnaround, sometimes others stuff had to take precedence. A completely separate area would have been better. Five Star has a place in Ithaca, but because they require payment up front, a lot of folks in the Ithaca area call 911 for a "bus" and demand a "Medicaid cab" afterward.
  4. If the toll roads and bridges in NY actually went solely to the E-Z Pass system (or similar), what would happen to those of us who pull a travel trailer. An example is that we did a trip to Indian Lake (for the annual Moose Festival... I kid you not). The deal is, you drive through a staffed toll lane, the clerk in the booth sees the trailer and (in my case) counts two axles, and adds it to my truck E-Z Pass account. Without somebody in that booth, I would either have to get a separate transponder for the trailer or just drive through as a freebie (on the trailer part). While I like using E-Z Pass for the convenience, I check my bill monthly (so far, no problems). As for Prince Andrew promising "cashless tolls", I look at that as just more "free ice cream".
  5. D-'s Pierogi Place

The food there has always been really good, prices reasonable, and the staff very helpful and friendly. Those three things are usually what makes and keeps a business solvent and successful. When I was told a long time ago that they were making trips to and from NJ for much of what they use in their food (they had posted an ad for a driver), I wondered how they could afford to do that. Such has been done before, but it was done differently. When Lucy and Charlie Giordano (originally from Phoenixville, PA) bought and operated the Mt. Tom Villa on Route 6 between Wellsboro and Gaines, PA more than three decades ago, they had all three things down solidly, and Charlie would haul fresh seafood in a specially made cooler in the back of a Subaru. Charlie also owned a metal fabricating business near Phoenixville and would make weekly trips there. On his way back, he would pick up a load of fresh seafood to bring back for the restaurant. As seafood was a relatively small part of their menu, the cost was certainly worthwhile. It appears the NJ trips are a part of what is hurting D's. Granted, theirs is a somewhat limited market, but the "crowd funding" approach does not bode well. Additionally, many people have been buttonholed for so many "causes", requests such as this are often ignored.
