ELMIRA – ON Saturday at around 6:00 pm, an Elmira Police officer observed a man riding a moped on the East Side North section of the City of Elmira. The man failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection of Division and Lake streets.

Police say that during the traffic stop, it was learned that the man’s driving privileges in the State of New York were suspended for failing to pay child support.

When the officer attempted to place the operator under arrest for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, the subject attempted to resist the arrest and a brief struggle ensued. The officer realized that the operator was armed as he discovered a .38 revolver secreted in a belly band holster. The operator was eventually able to be secured without any injuries to the officer or the operator.

A search incidental to arrest revealed that the operator also had a BB gun on his person as well as fentanyl and methamphetamine to sell.

As a result, police charged 38 year old MATTHEW A. SADLER of Elmira with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd, Criminal possession of a Weapon 3rd, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 2nd, two counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd, AUO and numerous NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law violations.
