BIG FLATS – A Newark Valley man was arrested on weapons charges after police responded on an arrest warrant in the Town of Big Flats.
On May 20, at about 7:50 a.m., members of the Sheriff’s Office responded to Candlewood Suites located at 198 Colonial Drive in the Town of Big Flats after receiving information that 38-year old Frederick R. Hillman III was located there. Deputies also learned that Hillman was in possession of a handgun.
Upon arrival, Hillman was found outside of the hotel with a backpack in his possession. He was taken into custody on a violation of a Family Court Act warrant of arrest, and, upon further investigation, a 9mm handgun was found inside Hillman’s backpack.
Hillman was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a Class C Felony, and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor. He was arraigned in the Town of Big Flats Court and remanded to the Chemung County Jail with bail set at $100,000.00 property bond and $50,000.00 cash. Hillman will appear in court at a later date to answer the charge.
